About Us

Our Mission. . .

At Oxford Academy of Dance, we pride ourselves on providing excellent technique training as well as a friendly and safe environment for all ages to learn the art of dance. Our teachers are experienced and qualified – many of our teachers have college degrees in Dance and Performance. We provide a comprehensive program for all ages and our teaching style is positive and encouraging. Here are a few things to consider before deciding on a studio for your child:

1. What qualifications do the teachers have?

Many students receive the wrong training from the start and have difficulty correcting it later. Dance teachers should have formal teacher training through master teachers, college dance programs, and/or dance teaching certification programs to ensure their dancers are learning the correct technique. When teachers have the correct training they can detect technique problems and correct them right away. All of our teachers are formally trained and some have even danced professionally!

2. What is the size of the class?

If a dance class has fewer students in it, each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun. With younger students it is easier for a teacher to maintain control over the class and make sure each student understands the fundamental concepts and instructions, while ensuring students don't develope bad habits or improper technique. Our studio limits all of our classes according to age and level.

3. What type of dance floor is used?

Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on bones and joints. Most dance footwear does not provide cushion or support, so the shock of dance movement can place a lot of pressure on the knees and back of a dancer. The best way to prevent against potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional dance floor. Our studio has a pro-level, suspended shock absorbent dance floor with a marley vinyl composite floor surface to prevent injury, slips and falls.

4. Are the costumes affordable and age appropriate?

The recital is the day everyone looks forward to all year! Parents do not want inappropriate or expensive costumes to get in the way of a beautiful day. We choose very appropriate costumes for all of the classes at an affordable price. Our costume fees range from $55.00-$75.00 per costume. We also offer free alterations if a child’s costume does not fit properly.

5. Can parents observe?

Parents love to see their children learning and growing. Who doesn’t love to watch a little one dance their heart out? Some studios allow parents to watch every week, some allow parents to watch once a month, some once a year. Some studios have closed circuit T.V., some have observation days, some have observation windows. Each studio is different.

We have observation days and observation windows. Twice a year parents can observe in the classroom for the last 15 minutes of class where they can take pictures and video tape their child. The first week of each month we also open the blinds in the observation windows for viewing.

6. What performing opportunities are offered?

Every studio has an end of the year performance with lights, costumes and make up. Performing is a huge part of dancing – it is an art form that needs to be showcased. The more experience students get performing, the better they become. Performing on stage develops confidence, poise and a sense of achievement.

Oxford Academy of Dance gives students many performing opportunities. Everyone performs in the spring recital. We also organize a Christmas show (which is optional). If students want to perform more we have performing companies and a liturgical company. These students can perform at nearby festivals and community events. We also have a competition company that performs year round at numerous events and competitions.

We have something for every level of dancer!
